Badgett Scholarship Fund

 Jaynie Narvell Badgett Scholarship Fund

 May 6, 1912 ~ September 28, 2006

The Jaynie Narvell Badgett Scholarship Fund was established February 12, 2007 in memory of Narvell Badgett.  Narvell was born near Kerr, Mississippi.  She was the 2nd child of Dallas Wesley (Wes) and Minnie Mae Morgan's 7 children.  She was named after her mother's sister Jaynie Sharp, who died tragically just a short time before Narvell was born.

The Morgan family moved to Oklahoma when Narvell was 1 1/2 years old and settled near Calera.  She attended Calera Schools for 12 years and graduated from Calera High School in 1929.  She started attending Southeastern State Teachers College in Durant, Oklahoma (now Southeastern Oklahoma State University) after high school.

Narvell started her teaching career at the age of 19, at a 2-teacher school located in the small community of Barwick, about 4 miles west of Calera.  She taught there for 4 years, riding a horse to and from school.  The Barwick School consolidated with Calera and she taught in the Calera Schools for the next 18 years, both elementary and high school.  She continued attending Southeastern while teaching and earned her Bachelors degree in Education in 1937.

Narvell and her 4 sisters who lived to adulthood (Augusta Richardson, Margaret Ausley, Oneita Lacey and Bobbie Miller) all became teachers and combined they taught over 150 years in the public schools of Oklahoma and Texas.

Narvell married Arthur L. Badgett on December 2, 1944 at the Methodist parsonage in Colbert, Oklahoma.  They built their house in Calera in 1951.  She taught for several years in the Talihina, Oklahoma schools along with Arthur.  She also taught in the Savanna, Oklahoma schools for 9 years where her husband, Arthur, was principal.  Both, Narvell and Arthur, retired from teaching in 1974 and returned to live at their home in Calera.

Narvell was a member of the Calera United Methodist Church from childhood.  Arthur preceded her in death in 1993 after they were married for 48 years.
